Ladang Betik Perak Diserang Penyakit

IPOH, 22 Mac 2010 (Bernama) -- Pengusaha tanamam betik di Perak akan diminta memusnahkan tanaman mereka berikutan serangan penyakit mati rosot yang kini menular di hampir kesemua ladang betik seluruh Perak. Ketua Penolong Pengarah Bahagian Pelindungan Tanaman dan Kuarantin Tumbuhan Jabatan Pertanian Perak Norsiyenti Othman berkata notis arahan itu akan dikeluarkan minggu ini kepada semua pengusaha ladang betik yang dijangkiti penyakit itu. Beliau berkata semua pengusaha yang menerima notis berkenaan perlu memusnahkan tanaman dalam tempoh lima minggu. "Tindakan segera perlu diambil bagi membendung jangkitan penyakit berkenaan memandangkan Perak adalah pengeluar utama betik negara dan perebakannya boleh mengancam industri tanaman betik negara," katanya pada sidang akhbar di sini Isnin. Beliau memberi amaran bahawa pengusaha yang enggan memberi kerjasama memusnahkan tumbuhan mereka boleh dikenakan denda maksimum RM10,000 mengikut Akta Kuarantin Tumbuhan 1976. Penyakit mati rosot adalah penyakit yang diwartakan sebagai berbahaya mengikut akta berkenaan. Norsiyenti berkata sehingga kini hanya daerah Hulu Perak didapati bebas daripada serangan penyakit berkenaan dan sebanyak 188.77 hektar atau 82.6 peratus daripada keluasan keseluruhan 228.55 hektar ladang betik di Perak telah diserang penyakit itu. Mengenai tindakan yang perlu diambil oleh pengusaha yang menerima notis, beliau berkata dua cara berkesan ialah menimbuskan tumbuhan yang dimusnahkan ke dalam lubang atau membakarnya. Beliau berkata pengusaha juga dinasihat supaya tidak menanam tumbuhan daripada keluarga labu seperti tembikai, timun dan labu air sebagai tanaman gantian kerana ia boleh menjadi perumah kepada bakteria yang menjadi punca serangan mati rosot. Penyakit mati rosot mulai dikesan di Batu Pahat, Johor pada tahun 2003 sebelum merebak ke Batang Padang, Perak pada 2004 dan serangan besar-besaran penyakit itu yang berlaku pada 2008 telah menjejaskan teruk industri betik negara. -- BERNAMA rujukan lanjut pada web rasmi MOA (klik SINI)

6 maut bas ekspres terbalik dekat Rawang

RAWANG: Lima penumpang dan pemandu sebuah bas ekspres terbunuh manakala dua orang cedera parah setelah bas itu terbabas lalu melanggar pembahagi jalan sebelum terbalik di KM 443 Lebuh Raya Utara-Selatan dekat sini pagi ini.

Polis berkata, kejadian berlaku pada 5.30 pagi setelah bas ekspres dua tingkat milik AB Ekspres itu membawa 34 penumpang dari Changlun, Kedah, gagal dikawal.

Mereka yang terbunuh dikenali sebagai Muhamad Ismail, 27, dari Kampung Lubuk Batu, Jitra; Mohamad Fauzi Awang, 57, Kampung Siam, Alor Setar; Md Jaheer Mohamad, 33, Kodiang; Mohd Yusril Zakaria, 27, Kuala Muda, Kedah; C. Magentharan, 26, dari Klang, dan pemandu bas, Zulkhibri Md Saad, 35, dari Kubang Ulu, Bukit Mertajam, Pulau Pinang.

King Consents To Najib's Appointment As Sixth PM

PUTRAJAYA, April 2 (Bernama) -- Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin has consented to the appointment of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as the sixth prime minister of Malaysia, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan announced Thursday.

He said in a statement that Najib would be presented his letter of appointment as prime minister and would take his oath of office, loyalty and confidentiality before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara at 10am tomorrow.

This morning, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to hand over the letter relinquishing the post of prime minister in accordance with the agreed transition of power from him to Najib.

Najib, who succeeded Abdullah as the Umno president at the party general assembly last week, also had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara today.

Abdullah was appointed the fifth prime minister of Malaysia on Oct 30 2003, having succeeded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Nestle Rancang Ladang Baru Dapat Bekalan Cili Mencukupi
PASIR PUTEH, 21 Jan (Bernama) -- Nestle (M) Bhd merancang kemungkinan membuka ladang baharu di Pantai Barat seperti Johor dan Melaka, dalam usaha mendapatkan bekalan antara 600 dan 800 metrik tan cili segar.Pegawai Pertanian syarikat berkenaan Yong Lee Kheng berkata bekalan itu untuk menampung keperluan kilangnya di Petaling Jaya yang memerlukan bahan mentah terbabit bagi pengeluaran produk sos cili yang kini mendapat permintaan yang semakin tinggi."Pada masa ini kita hanya mendapat bekalan daripada Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan (PPK) Bukit Awang, Pasir Puteh menerusi perjanjian ladang kontrak," katanya kepada pemberita ketika ditemui di sini, Rabu.Beliau berkata pihaknya tidak mahu terlalu bergantung kepada bekalan daripada PPK semata-mata kerana Kelantan mengalami bencana banjir setiap tahun yang boleh menjejaskan jumlah pengeluaran bekalan yang diperlukan oleh syarikat itu.Yong berkata sepanjang tahun lepas, daripada 400 metrik yang diperlukan, hanya 257 metrik sahaja dapat dipenuhi akibat bencana alam itu.Beliau berkata berdasarkan hakikat itu pihaknya kemungkinan tidak akan menambah jumlah kuota yang sedia ada kerana pihaknya tidak mahu terus menanggung risiko yang akan merugikan syarikat dalam jangka panjang.Sementara itu, Pengarah Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladang (LPP) Kelantan, Salim Sulaiman ketika ditemui berkata pihaknya yakin dapat menyelesaikan masalah itu menerusi kaedah penanaman fertigasi yang dapat mengurangkan taburan hujan ke atas pokok cili.Beliau berkata LPP akan membelanjakan sebahagian daripada peruntukan RM1.56 juta yang diluluskan oleh Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladang Kebangsaan untuk menggalak petani yang berpengalaman menggunakan teknologi penanaman fertigasi.-- BERNAMA

Former Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Rafiah Salim has alleged gender bias by the government towards local academicians amidst the controversy of her not being re-appointed to the post.
The first woman to head a public university in the country, Rafiah’s contract was not renewed recently and she was informed on the decision merely 48 hours before the expiry of her term.
She was appointed in May 2006.
“Just because we are women and we don’t have that thing between the legs so we are not good,” she told Malaysiakini in an one-hour interview today held at her new office at UM.
Former vice-chancellors of UM, the country’s oldest public university, are often granted an office premise to conduct research and development.

Alonso Wins In The Night

SINGAPORE, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- Fernando Alonso won the Singtel Singapore Grand Prix against all odds, but who is to deny the 27-year-old Spaniard his moment of glory under the lights.The two-time former World champion took the chequered flag in the 61-lap race which will go down into the history of Formula 1 as the first race to be held in the night under the glare of the floodlights.But for Alonso, the world champion in 2005 and 2006, it doesn't really matter as he took his Renault across the bumps and the many turns of the 5.067km street circuit to come home in a total time of 1hr: 57 mins 16.30secs with William's Nico Rosberg second and world championship leader Lewis Hamilton in a McClaren coming home third.Pre-race favourite Felippe Massa of Brazil, who was in pole position, faded away after leading for 17 laps, no thanks to a disastrous refuelling pit stop which saw him speed away with the gasoline hose still stuck to his Ferrari.By the time the damage was repaired, Massa had lost precious seconds and the lead. Melamine & Milk Based Products From China

Supermarkets To Be Screened For China Milk Based Products
BENTONG, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said checks will be made on supermarkets and shops to screen for milk based products from China."Whether it is purely milk, or any kind of food like cookies which contain dairy milk from China will be checked and samples taken for the Chemistry Department to analyse."Cooperation from the wholesalers, consumers and related parties are needed. We are very concerned about the health of consumers and do not want it to cost lives," he said after giving Aidilfitri aid to the poor here Tuesday.No time frame was given for the checks to be conducted.Liow said the checks were necessary as Singapore health authorities had found melamine in "White Rabbit Creamy Candy".

He said the government would not compromise and would seize milk based products from China to protect children from products tainted with melamine.Melamine is an industrial material used in the manufacturing of plastic and fertiliser.Rich in nitrogen, it could raise the protein level when mixed with milk. It is prohibited in food production.

Abdullah Expresses Surprise Over Muhyiddin's Statement On Transition Plan

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today expressed surprise over a statement by Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that his transition plan to step down in June 2010 was too long. Abdullah, who is also Umno president, said the Cabinet understood and agreed with the transition plan and the Umno Supreme Council had also agreed to it."I'm surprised that a member of my Cabinet should come up with that kind of statement. It is against what has been agreed to," he told reporters after chairing the 20th MSC Malaysia Implementation Council Meeting at his office here. Abdullah was asked to comment on the statement yesterday in Singapore by Muhyiddin, who is also International Trade and Industry Minister, that the transition plan had "sunk away" and that people were not thinking about it anymore. Abdullah also said he was surprised that Muhyiddin came up with such an opinion as he had agreed to that (transition plan) before. Under the plan for transition of power, Abdullah is to hand over the post of prime minister, the chairmanship of the Barisan Nasional (BN) and the presidency of Umno to his deputy, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, in June 2010.Abdullah said: "I'm not staying on just for the pleasure. I tell you this is not work that I can regard as pleasure."The prime minister said there were many political matters and problems that had to be attended to and "lots of programmes that I have already indicated that I must do my best to complete".Abdullah said these included the reform of the judiciary and the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA)."And I still have the IPCMC (Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission); a matter to look into, the last part of the police reform. At the same time, I have promised that we would like to achieve eradication of hardcore poverty."I would like to work very hard on it and, at the same time, there is a lot of work that needs to be done, to reform the Barisan Nasional (BN) and also to add more, to expand the (BN's) capacity to serve the people," he said.Abdullah said that as for Umno, there was also a lot to be done, as well as to help his deputy, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, to achieve the objectives of the stated programmes.Asked whether he would ask Muhyiddin to explain why he had come out with such a statement, Abdullah said: "There is no need to ask me what I'm going to do."On former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's decision to rejoin Umno, he said the subject was not discussed (at yesterday's meeting of the Umno Supreme Council)."My view alone is not enough ... this is a matter for the party. Empat agensi agama dakwa Raja Petra hina Islam
PUTRAJAYA - Empat agensi agama Islam semalam membuat laporan polis terhadap penulis blog Malaysia Today Raja Petra Kamaruddin kerana mendakwa menghina agama Islam dan umatnya melalui artikel-artikel di portal berita itu.
Laporan polis itu dibuat oleh Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim), Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz, Pengurus Besar Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) Dr. Abdul Ghani Mohamed, Pengarah Jabatan Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (Jawi), Datuk Che Mat Che Ali dan Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (Maiwp) Anan C. Mohd.
Laporan itu dibuat di Balai Polis Putrajaya pada pukul 12.40 tengah hari.
"Kami minta pihak berkuasa menyiasat tulisan-tulisan ini dan ambil tindakan sewajarnya supaya ia dapat jadi pengajaran kepada semua pihak sama ada muslim atau bukan muslim," kata Wan Mohamad.
Ditanya mengapa laporan itu dibuat setelah kerajaan mengharamkan blog berkenaan, Wan Mohamad berkata, tiada jaminan bahawa Raja Petra tidak akan mengeluarkan artikel seperti itu di saluran yang lain. - Bernama

ISA Can Be Used On Raja Petra, Says Syed Hamid

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- Action under the Internal Security Act (ISA) can be taken against "Malaysia-Today" blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin for his comments on the blog which allegedly insulted Islam and Prophet Muhammad.Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said if the investigation which was being conducted based on police reports made by four religious agencies found that he committed the offence, Raja Petra would face the action.Syed Hamid was commenting on the police reports lodged by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim), Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (Maiwp) and Federal Territory Religious Department (Jawi) against Raja Petra.They complained that in his comment on an article entitled "I Promise to be a good, non-hypocritical Muslim", Raja Petra allegedly used sentences which insulted Muslims.He is also alleged to have allowed comments which degraded Islam and Prophet Muhammad for an article entitled "Not all Arabs are descendants of the Prophet" to be published in the blog."The action taken by the religious agencies is in line with the law because his (Raja Petra) actions to use obscene and bad words for Prophet Muhammad is clearly in contradiction of the law."The probe and action should be expedited so that he will realise his mistakes and learn to respect Islam," Syed Hamid said.Although Raja Petra claimed that he was not the blog's owner, Syed Hamid said Raja Petra had to be responsible for the contents published as he had always made himself appear as the sole representative for the blog.On a related development, Syed Hamid said the establishment of a media council should be reviewed due to the "daringness" shown lately by bloggers to put themselves above the law.The establishment of such a council was proposed earlier but was protested by media practitioners."The establishment of the council is not meant for controlling the media, but more on managing them in case they violate the freedom given to them."I will try to discuss with media practitioners to get their feedback on the matter," he added.-- BERNAMA

Laporan Audit 2007 mendedahkan kira-kira 40 peratus daripada sampel produk makanan yang diimport di pasaran tempatan menggunakan logo halal yang bukan disahkan atau dikeluarkan Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim). Ketika ini, hanya sembilan logo halal diiktiraf Jakim. Ketua Audit Negara, Tan Sri Ambrin Buang, berkata pihaknya memilih 42 sampel produk makanan di pasaran yang diimport bagi tempoh Februari hingga awal Mac tahun ini dan mendapati hanya 25 sampel menggunakan logo halal diluluskan Jakim. Selain itu Ketua Audit Negara turut mendedahkan, daripada 45 sampel produk makanan tempatan yang dikaji, hanya 31 menggunakan logo halal yang masih sah, manakala lima produk makanan masih mempamerkan logo halal walaupun sudah tamat tempoh dan selebihnya sembilan yang lain mempamerkan logo bukan dalam senarai halal Jakim.

USM berjaya dipilih sertai program Apex

PUTRAJAYA: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) hari ini berjaya dipilih untuk menyertai Program Pemacuan Untuk Kecemerlangan atau Apex dengan mengetepikan tiga lagi universiti, termasuk Universiti Malaya (UM). Menteri Pengajian Tinggi, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, berkata pemilihan USM adalah berdasarkan kepada pelan tranformasi dan kesediaannya untuk berubah seperti yang terkandung dalam kertas cadangnnya, memenuhi kriteria pemilihan yang diperlukan. “Pemilihan bagi program Apex tidak hanya melihat kepada pencapaian dan kecemerangan lepas tetapi lebih kepada perancangan masa depan serta sama ada universiti itu dapat mencapai status bertaraf dunia dalam tempoh yang diberikan iaitu lima tahun,” katanya semasa mengumumkan pemilihan USM di sini hari ini. Katanya, dalam tempoh itu, USM mesti berada di antara 100 universiti terbaik dunia dan berada di dalam senarai 50 universiti terbaik dunia pada 2020. “Kita lihat dulu bagaimana kejayaan USM selepas itu barulah keputusan dibuat sama ada akan terdapat satu lagi universiti dipilih untuk program Apex,” katanya. Ditanya mengapa UM sebagai universiti tertua negara tidak terpilih, Mohamed Khaled berkata: “Pemilihan USM tidak bermaksud universiti lain akan dipinggirkan sebaliknya diharapkan ia akan menjadi perangsang kepada universiti yang tidak terpilih untuk terus berusaha mencapai status yang lebih baik dan bertaraf dunia.” Sebanyak sembilan universiti seluruh negara telah menghantar permohonan dan hanya empat universiti iaitu USM, UM, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) dan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) disenarai pendek. Kertas cadangan USM bertemakan “Transforming Higher Education for a Sustainable Tomorrow”. Universiti Apex ialah pengiktirafan yang diberikan kepada IPT tempatan yang menjadi penanda aras di peringkat dunia dalam bidang pengajian tinggi dan dijanjikan autonomi daripada segi kewangan, skim perkhidmatan, pengurusan, pengambilan pelajar, kepemimpinan tertinggi dan penetapan yuran pengajian. — Bernama

Don't View Anwar's Victory Lightly, Says Muhyiddin
SINGAPORE, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) should not take lightly the victory of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election, said Umno Vice-President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.Muhyiddin said he was concerned that the voters' decision to give victory to the opposition would become a trend."Although it was just a by-election, it could be an indication of a trend that the voters had already decided that they wanted change even if they didn't know what the changes were, and refused to accept BN's leadership," he told Malaysian journalists here.Muhyiddin, who is International Trade and Industry Minister, was here to attend the Asean Economic Ministers Meeting.He said BN and Umno should conduct a post-mortem and take steps to speed up Umno's reinventing process as well as measures to rebrand the BN with new approach more acceptable to the people.According to him, this would require the BN and Umno to re-evaluate whether their approach to campaign was already "stale and no longer acceptable to the people."

Menurut beliau, ini memerlukan pendekatan yang perlu dilakukan oleh UMNO dan BN dan menilai semula sama ada cara ia berkempen “sudah basi dan tidak diterima rakyat” lagi. “Ini jelas bahawa kita perlu buat satu perubahan cepat, corak, daya dan perubahan organisasi kita dan cara kita,” kata beliau. Penjelasan yang dibawa oleh pemimpin kita tak diterima, seolah-olah keputusan yang dibuat awal- awal yang mengatakan BN tak akan menang dan PKR akan tahan (mempertahankan) kawasan itu,” katanya. PKR mempertahankan kerusi Parlimen Permatang Pauh setelah Anwar menang dengan majoriti 15,671 undi pada pilihan raya kecil kawasan itu semalam. Anwar, 61, memperolehi 31,195 undi sementara calon BN, Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah, 51, mendapat 15,524 undi manakala calon Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (AKIM) Hanafi Mamat, 61, hilang wang pertaruhan selepas mendapat hanya 92 undi. AirAsia Not Renewing Deal With Manchester United

BANGKOK, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia will not renew a sponsorship deal with European and English Premier champions Manchester United for the new season.Its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes confirmed that a new deal was not reached with one of the most prestigious football clubs in the world with about 75 million fans around the globe."Confirmed. We have achieved what we want," Fernandes said in a SMS reply when asked to confirm speculation that AirAsia has not renewed its sponsorships.Passengers boarding AirAsia's planes could not locate any logos and stickers of MU on some of the flights since early this month, but the club's merchandises are still being sold onboard.AirAsia first signed a one-year sponsorship deal as the official low fare airline for MU for the English League Premier season from August 2005 to May 2006, and had renewed it until the end of 2007/2008 season which was won by the club under legendary manager Alex Ferguson. Fernandes, however, declined to reveal the value of previous sponsorships and also refused to confirm if MU has demanded for more money."I can't tell you," he replied.

Muslim Entrepreneurs Misconstrue Halal Certification - Mashitah

IPOH, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- More non- Muslim entrepreneurs have halal (permissible in Islam) certificates than their Muslim counterparts who feel that they do not need one as they are Muslims.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said this was a misconception on the part of Muslim entrepreneurs due to lack of awareness and understanding of the halal concept.

Muslim entrepreneurs also have to apply for the halal certificate especially when they are planning to export their products, she told reporters after opening the state-level National Halal Industry Development Seminar here today.

She said the halal concept being developed by the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) is not only confined to the ingredients of the products but also encompassed the 'halalan toyyiban' (lawful and wholesome) which gave importance to their cleanliness, health and safety.

From the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim)'s record, she said 80 per cent of halal certificates were approved to non-Muslim companies in 2006.

On the seminar, she said it was aimed at creating awareness on the importance of the halal standards to entrepreneurs and consumers.

HDC chief executive officer Datuk Seri Jamil Bidin said the government provided grants to companies including the small and medium enterprises to acquire halal certificates for their products.

PUTRAJAYA 15 Jun – Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi hari ini mengulangi bahawa beliau akan mempertahankan jawatan Presiden UMNO pada pemilihan parti yang dijadualkan Disember ini.
Beliau berkata, tiada alasan bagi beliau untuk tidak bertanding.
Semasa ditanya mengenai tarikh peralihan kuasa kepimpinan, Abdullah berkata, ini akan dibincangkan dengan timbalan beliau, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“Kami masih belum bersetuju secara tepat tarikh peralihan kuasa itu. Bukan dalam masa satu, dua atau tiga bulan akan datang,” kata beliau pada dialog dengan kira-kira 30 ketua media Forum Ekonomi Dunia di sini. - Bernama
